Start your Saturday with a cheeky 5k
parkrun has become a phenomenon since its beginnings in Bushy Park, London some 15 years ago. Now there are over 650 locations hosting events in the UK alone. Over 2 million people in the UK have take part in an event at least once. Then there’s the rest of the world. From Australia to the United States, and Japan to the Falkland Islands. Each event is unique, but all are always friendly. A marshal at Luton told me “it doesn’t matter what’s going on with the news, parkrun just lets you escape”. That’s a big impact. Each event has a great sense of community, where athletes and walkers mix freely. There’s even the concept of “parkrun tourism”, where runners travel to different event locations. The hardcore park runners challenge themselves to run an event whose name begins with every letter of the alphabet. There’s even a snood that acolytes of parkrun tourism recognise. It’s a great way to get active both physically and socially. You can run your 5k and get on with your day, pausing to celebrate that new personal best when the result is sent to you of course!
